Ludo - Love Me Dead

posted by CHELSEA | Tuesday, January 29, 2008 | 2:39 PM
Recently the world of music videos has seen tons of artists turning their song into a short movie. Think of Panic! At The Disco and The Killers latest videos. However, when was the last time you watched a lead singer perform in his own video like he's in Broadway musical? Singer, Andrew Volpe, of the band Ludo definitely hits that note in their one-shot video for "Love Me Dead" that features several fascinating escapades in the background. It could be the best music video I've seen since OK Go hit those treadmills. Check it out!

Out Of The Cold

posted by High Voltage Staff | Sunday, January 27, 2008 | 7:11 PM
I'm not sure how recycling works but if you gathered a years worth of PBR cans, threw them in an aluminum shredder (I’m pretty sure they crush cans but bear with me) and just let them do their thing that would somewhat give you the idea of Wisconsin’s own Father Phoenix.

Formed out of the vibrant Milwaukee hardcore scene, Father Phoenix has spent the last two years destroying basements with their grimy punk rock style and building a two story library, complete with ladders (you know, the kind with wheels), full of material.

With the release of their self titled album on the upstart label Mice Unite, Father Phoenix will be spending 2008 improving on their already stellar reputation and drinking every beer in the brew city, in no particular order.

So check out their jams and if you’re feeling up to it, purchase the record. — Sean Williamson

So, no, he's wasn't born in the 60's, nor is he a baby-daddy. He is, however, a photographer, the man who brought us Junk-mag.com, and a Dj to top it all off.

Who do I have to talk to to make this happen? Seriously. Need contact information. My little music crush, Operator Please, have yet to lilly dally their way through the US of A. They've played shows in NY and LA but not enough times. Is there a petition that needs signing? What's the deal?!

In case you're still in the dark, here's some visual knowledge.

New Video: "Get What You Want"

What more can be done to get them over here besides physically kidnapping them? Last I checked that was still illegal. Any suggestions?!

For the rest of you on this planet, if you're lucky enough to be within driving distance from any of their gigs, please go out and support.

MGMT - "Time To Pretend" video

This video has elements that have become way too common in many of my dreams (and wake life): bodies of water, frolicking, fire, space travel, vibrant colors, babies, poor Photoshop skills, shirtless pretty boy, and kittens!

Enjoy.

Don't know what the hell a MGMT is? Two dudes who make cool trippy music. Or ask the hip kid standing next to you.

SXSWAny music fan's wet dream, a week full of music, rubbing elbows with some of your favorite artists and SOON to be favorites, noon parties with a full bar, and everything else that falls under the category of rock 'n' roll debauchery -- some folk have coined this event as SXSW (that's South By Southwest for those who just crawled out of a cave). It is QUICKLY approaching! Although the official list of artists performing in Austin, TX this year has yet to be released, a list has been compiling of rumored artists who could attend.

If you don't mind speculation and just want a list of Maybe's to drool over, feast your eyes on the "might be showing up" list drawn up by the Austinist.

Ozzy Osbourne + More

Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie & In This Moment
Reviewed by Izzy Cihak

In a time when rock's greatest stars have become middle-aged family men and worthwhile younger bands are confined to clubs, even the year's best arena rock tour can look more like Spinal Tap than The Song Remains the Same. This was the case when Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, and In This Moment graced the stage of the Wachovia Spectrum. But, let's face it, even when an artist is a little (or quite a bit, as the last third of the night proved) past their prime, it's hard not to get excited about a full night of rock anthems, pyrotechnics, and lighthearted blasphemy. Kate Nash
Made of Bricks
(Geffen/Fiction)

With the changing of years comes a new brassy, underage, British songstress gracing MTV. Surprisingly, this time around the Date Show Network is actually pushing someone worth listening to. After cracking the top 40 in several European countries, Kate Nash's debut album, Made of Bricks, has finally made its way to the states. The album is a collection of delightfully told fables about things like a friendship with a skeleton and a girl who chose to glue her mouth shut. (read more)

Gangsta Rap Rock

posted by Just M! | Sunday, January 13, 2008 | 6:21 PM

Say whaa?

What happens when you listen to Tupac and Eminem (to name a few) but have an inner rockstar fighting to get out? You get the start of something good. Meet Hyro Da Hero, only 20 years old, from Houston, TX. Hyro’s sound is straight gangsta flow over rock and roll beats, guaranteed to get you to bob your head and take notice. His lyrics aren't thrown together just because they rhyme or sound good. They have a message behind them, something hip-hop seems to have lost in recent years. In a groundbreaking maneuver, Hyro Da Hero has made his own mixtape, a collection of his own material available online for free download via his iLike page. Just a taste of what is yet to come!

Download:
"Tainted Love" [mp3]
"Enter the Dragon" [mp3]

You like? Download the rest of his mixtape over on iLike.

posted by High Voltage Staff | Thursday, January 3, 2008 | 7:26 PM

Our first band crush of 2008 has arrived! Temposhark, hailing from London, are getting ready to release their debut, The Invisible Line, in March. They've got synth power, a killer voice, and violin parts that make The Faint shake in their boots. The Invisible Line hasn't come out of the CD player since it arrived at the High Voltage office and we're sure Temposhark's sleaze-electro-rock will soon swoon you over as well.

So without further ado we'd like to welcome Temposhark as High Voltage's first 2008 artist of the moment!

"The City Is At War"

posted by Just M! | Tuesday, January 1, 2008 | 6:23 PM
Hope you've all regained consciousness after ringing in the new year! Anybody broken their new year's resolution yet? One of mine was to find a group of people willing to profile around in white, cause social disorder, and cream people in the face with pies all the while lookin' super slick. Gangsta style. Then I watched Cobra Starship's new video and apparently it's already been done!

Happy New Year, here's pie in your eye!!!
